National Labor Caucus of State Legislators Mission

  • Mobilize and organize union-friendly and union member legislators to provide a more effective voice for working families in the states.

  • Support the principle that all workers—in both the public and private sectors—are entitled to form a union and bargain collectively in an     environment free of interference, intimidation or reprisals, and actively support workers’ efforts to organize.

  • Promote a progressive working families’ agenda in state legislatures by supporting issues including but not limited to quality, affordable health care for all; supporting high-quality public education for our children; supporting living wages that can support families; supporting job safety and health protections; supporting a sound retirement system that includes pensions, private savings and a strong Social Security program; supporting corporate responsibility to protect workers, the environment and our communities; supporting basic worker protections such as workers’ compensation, unemployment insurance and prevailing wages; and supporting fair trade policies that benefit rather than harm working people here and abroad.

  • Create a forum to discuss policy, develop model legislation, exchange information and work with other progressive organizations on key policy issues that impact working families.

  • Increase the visibility of the union movement and working families’ issues within the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL) and other national legislative associations by meeting as a Caucus at the NCSL Annual Meeting; participating in workshop panels on working families issues; and coordinating and promoting progressive policy resolutions.
