Statement by AFL-CIO President John Sweeney on Funding for Auto Retooling Program
September 17, 2008

Congress should take immediate action to fully fund the Advanced Technology Vehicles Manufacturing Incentive Program (ATVMIP) that was established by Section 136 of the energy legislation which was enacted by Congress last year.

Fully funding the auto retooling program is one of the most important steps that Congress can take right now to stimulate the economy and create jobs for American workers. By providing the funding for the auto retooling program, we can make sure that the cars and trucks of the future and their key components will be built in this country. This can create tens of thousands of jobs that our nation urgently needs.

At the same time, this program will help accelerate the introduction of advanced, more fuel efficient vehicles. This will reduce oil consumption and our dependence on foreign oil. It will also reduce emissions of greenhouse gases and help to combat global warming.

Immediate, full funding for the auto retooling program is a win-win for the economy and American workers, for the environment and for energy security.
